Village of Waterville/Town of Sangerfield Summer Recreation Program |
The Village of Waterville/Town of Sangerfield Summer Recreation program is once again in full swing with over 110 children enrolled! The summer recreation gardens have become the Memorial Park Courtyard Gardens! Many teachers have taken advantage of the open spaces. The Summer Recreation Gardeners will continue to expand the vegetable gardens and maintain the beds that classroom students have planted. (Caution: watering plants on a hot day could cause a water battle!) Mrs. Nicotera's class learned how the Native Americans survived the harsh winters in New York by planting the three sisters (corn beans and squash). Mrs. Marsh's UPK class read a book titled The Sunflower House and planted one! The summer recreation gardeners will protect and water it so Mrs. Marsh's class can play in the house when they return to school as kindergarteners in the fall. Mr. Sentz's class studied the life cycle of a plant and planted beans, basil, carrots, sunflowers and pumpkins. Mrs. Wicks's class went to Gallagher's farm to plant pumpkins and had a few leftover for the Courtyard Gardens . Mrs. Stewart's class read a book titled Growing Vegetable Soup, and then planted garlic, potatoes, carrots, corn and onions. They will make vegetable soup when they return to school in the fall. Mrs. Sigmund's group did some research and built a butterfly house and will plant flowers to attract the butterflies. This summer the gardeners will be adding a bird bath made of cement and researching ways to collect rain water to irrigate more efficiently. The culinary camp that we began last summer was very successful and we look forward to offering our middle school students a tasty cooking experience one afternoon a week. Also designed for the middle school student, we will be offering a craft class, taught by Mrs. Peeling. The Girl Scouts are planning exciting activities on Thursdays afternoons. Along with many field trips planned, Roger's Environmental Education Center will be visiting us with games designed to acquaint us with the wildlife of New York State . Our talented students will be showcasing the community's gifted students at the Fourth Annual Talent Show held at Harding Nursing Home. Swimming lessons will once again be offered at Madison Lake on Mondays and Wednesdays. We live in an extremely generous community with many members who volunteer to share their time and knowledge.
